PyData Berlin 2016 This talk describes BigchainDB. BigchainDB fills a gap in the decentralization ecosystem: a decentralized database, at scale. It has big-data performance levels, a querying system, and a permissioning system that supports public and private versions. It's complementary to decentralized processing platforms like Ethereum, and decentralized file systems like IPFS. BigchainDB is written in Python. This talk describes BigchainDB. BigchainDB fills a gap in the decentralization ecosystem: a decentralized database, at scale. It points to performance of 1 million writes per second throughput, storing petabytes of data, and sub-second latency. The BigchainDB design starts with a distributed database (DB), and through a set of innovations adds blockchain characteristics: decentralized control, immutability, and creation & movement of digital assets. BigchainDB inherits characteristics of modern distributed databases: linear scaling in throughput and capacity with the number of nodes, a full-featured NoSQL query language, efficient querying, and permissioning. Being built on an existing distributed DB, it also inherits enterprise-hardened code for most of its codebase. Scalable capacity means that legally binding con- tracts and certificates may be stored directly on the blockchain database. The permissioning system enables configurations ranging from private enterprise blockchain databases to open, public blockchain databases. BigchainDB is complementary to decentralized processing platforms like Ethereum, and decentralized file systems like InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). This talk describes technology perspectives that led to the BigchainDB design: traditional blockchains, distributed databases, and a case study of the domain name system (DNS). We introduce a concept called blockchain pipelining, which is key to scalability when adding blockchainlike characteristics to the distributed DB. We present a thorough description of BigchainDB, a detailed analysis of latency, and experimental results. The talk concludes with a description of use cases. The success of Bitcoin shows that financial transactions can be conducted in a decentralized way. Whether you believe in Bitcoin as a currency or not, there is no denying that Bitcoin’s underlying storage model and consensus-based protocol, the blockchain, validated a new data architecture for building networked applications. In a world of Big Data and the Cloud, the Bitcoin blockchain, the largest of its kind, is still relatively small at around 25 GB. As developers start to imagine new applications beyond money-like infocurrency, they find that they want to store additional metadata or even rich content in the blockchain. In this talk, Chris Tse, an architect and designer of digital ecosystems, will present a hierarchical data storage model that divides a decentralized application storage needs into three tiers, to be stored in the blockchain (GBs), a NoSQL document store (TBs), and BLOB store (PBs), respectively. Using cryptographic techniques along with Smart Contracts, Chris will show how developers can maintain the trustless model advocated by the Bitcoin enthusiasts, while tapping into the proven scalability of distributed database clusters like Couchbase and P2P file transfer protocols like BitTorrent. Chris will present an example of how Monegraph, a digital artwork registry and marketplace spearheaded by NYU art professor Kevin McCoy, is moving to this tiered architecture using a combination of the Ethereum blockchain, Couchbase document store, and Amazon S3 / BitTorrent to build vibrant market for buying, selling, and licensing digital art. This talk was originally presented at Couchbase Connect on October 6, 2014 at Westin St. Francis Grand Ballroom in San Francisco. http://www.patrickschwerdtfeger.com/sbi/ The fields of Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence are converging, and they will intersect soon. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning require vast amounts of data. That's how they learn. Meanwhile, Blockchain allows for decentralized autonomous organizations which will soon involve hundreds of millions of people. Furthermore, platforms built on Blockchain technology will soon be powerful enough to support AI applications. At that point, AI could evolve very quickly and become, effectively, an unstoppable utility for the world's population. No one knows exactly how this convergence will play out. Certainly, I do not either, but I know this is an exciting time and I plan on following the developments as they emerge. The results will most definitely affect us all. Patrick Schwerdtfeger is a leading authority on technology trends including big data, artificial intelligence and blockchain. He has written four books and is a regular speaker for Bloomberg TV. This video shows why middleware and streaming analytics is relevant for any blockchain project. It discusses how to leverage stream processing and how to integrate with blockchain events. The focus was on integration of TIBCO StreamBase and Ethereum Blockchain. But the same can be done easily for any Hyperledger Blockchain like IBM's Fabric, IROHA or Intel's Sawtooth Lake, or others like R3 Corda or Ripple. For smart contract deployment, I use Browser Solidity and MetaMask. But the same can be achieved with TIBCO StreamBase (or BusinessWorks, too). The live demo can be watched on Youtube. The outlook includes some upcoming topics like - Live Visualization for Real Time Monitoring and Proactive Actions - Cross-Integration with Ethereum and Hyperledger Blockchains -Data Discovery for Historical Analysis to Find Insights and Patterns - Machine Learning to Build of Analytic Models - Application Integration with other Applications (Legacy, Cloud Services, …) - Native Hardware Integration with Internet of Things Devices Some use cases / real world examples: - Banking: Data Discovery for compliance issues, fraud or other anomalies - Stock / Energy Trading: Subcribe to events (e.g. price went over a threshold) – event correlation and proactive live UI - Manufacturing / Internet of Things: Supply chain management with various partner companies (maybe even various blockchains) - Many other use cases... Thanks to my colleague Steven Warwick for implementing the StreamBase connectors and demo!
